from my disposable camera (and new things soon).

hey guys, sorry for going mute on you for a few days. i was in the middle of packing my new york life together …. BUT MORE ON THAT SOON. i’m very excited to share with you my next chapter, but first—let’s look at the other half of my disposable camera (first half here).

44350019

one day, me and robert walked around in greenpoint in brooklyn and checked out stores and hung out by the water.

44350018

a plane drew this heart. <3

44350011

and then in november i flew to toronto. cn tower was swimming in fog when i arrived.

44350009

this is kensington market, the little vintage village in toronto filled with thrift stores.

44350008

in mid-december, i said goodbye to the ad agency i interned at, and me and my intern friends had dinner at eataly.

44350007

me and jens! we were besties back in sf but haven’t hung out that much since we both moved to new york. we managed to meet a few times though. at h&m for example.

44350006

christmas came, and siri flew over from san francisco to visit me.

44350005

we ate all of the food in new york and did both local and touristy stuff—like taking pics at times square.

44350002

2016 ended, and i spent my new years eve with my new york bestie robert! <3 we went for dinner and drinks in west village.

44350001

and then continued the party in williamsburg until it was 2017 and my disposable camera was done!

mao

from my disposable camera.

this fall and winter, i’ve been shooting a little bit on a disposable camera. hadn’t done this in years, so it was definitely long overdue.

let’s have a look on some of the photos i managed to capture, shan’t we?

44350026

the beginning of the film starts in los angeles, when me, siri, sandra and the rest of this party gang were there for the festival stockholm, CA.

44350025

siri, me, gustav and sandra (plus a photobomber) at veronica maggio’s concert.

44350024

i flew from new york to los angeles for like 30h, but it was worth it. <3

44350021

who could this have been? hmmm. little dragen? elliphant maybe? not quite sure : ) (here‘s by the way the post on that day. i’ve linked it 100 times before, but i guess i just did it again)

44350017

back in new york! on halloween. i celebrated with robert and his last-minute outfit was a $3 eyeliner that made him a bandit.

44350016

jay came too—and didn’t have a costume either, so we made him a skeleton with the same $3 eyeliner.

44350015a

i was dressed in black in my vampire shirt.

44350014

and we hung out at a rooftop in bed-stuy, at the probably weirdest party in the city at that moment.

44350012

there was a super old contortionist, dead animals on the wall, and everything was twin peak-themed and bathing in red lighting. here‘s the post to that strange strange night.

mao

last day in toronto: brunch, hail, and a missed flight.

toronto / saturday.

let’s look at my last full day in toronto! i started here.

toronto / saturday.

at the brunch place le petit déjeuner in old town.

toronto / saturday.

i was hungry, so i grabbed this salmon eggs benedict with bottomless coffee.

toronto / saturday.

but then i had to jump over here! to st lawrence market, which is a food market that has been picked best in the world.

toronto / saturday.

met up with my hunky friend daniel who lives down the street and offered to show me around. yay!

toronto / saturday.

it was pretty big, but daniel guided me through the food maze. (<—– also food maze yes plz)

toronto / saturday.

and then we took a stroll outside. over there here is toronto’s own flatiron building, by the way! v cute. and prettier that new york’s. can you see?

toronto / saturday.

no you cant so here’s a better picture.

toronto / saturday.

then we took the subway to drake’s old neighborhoods hehe, and had coffee at sorry coffee co. yum.

toronto / saturday.

cute hidden lil walkways.

toronto / saturday.

at the royal ontario museum (which lives inside this rad building) we hugged each other goodbye.

toronto / saturday.

but first, a proof that i was even there. hi from me in my old h&m coat and new marc jacobs cashmeere scarf.

toronto / saturday.

i kept walking on my own and decided to go to little italy, and crossed these neighborhoods, that feel like europe?! london? hmm.

toronto / saturday.

since i had had a big breakfast, the sun was already setting when it was time for my late lunch. gnocchi!

toronto / saturday.

and then i walked along college street all the way back to the city center again.

toronto / saturday.

at one point, it started hailing (!) out of nowhere, but soon it stopped, and it left the toronto night pretty like this. and then i spent the rest of the night lying down after all the walking and then taking a last late dinner before i went to sleep. and then i messed up with my alarm clock (if you use bedtime for ios10, you know you can set up what days it should ring, and i only had it turned on mon-fri) .. and even though my alarm was on for 4.40 am, it didn’t ring because it was sunday … and so i missed my flight and had to pay $250 extra for the only other seat that was left that day. but i did get home at last. phew.

thank you toronto! you were cute.

mao

toronto day 2: vintage shopping and report from inside a brewery.

toronto / friday.

day two in toronto! woke up to this misty view and started my day by just walking.

toronto / friday.

partly to shelter from the rain and partly to get some breakfast sweets, i stopped here at dark horse.

toronto / friday.

and got a cappuccino and a cookie.

toronto / friday.

and then i just strolled. in and out of stores, up towards chinatown, past the art gallery of ontario that i was thinking about visiting, but then skipped because it was soooo crowded.

toronto / friday.

and went down to kensington market instead, where it’s packed with cute little vintage stores.

toronto / friday.

*the antithesis of my picture of north american metropolitan*

toronto / friday.

this place though!!! a store filled with cocktail, mixology, and drink supplies. even though i’m not crafty like that, everything in there was like PORN. go here if you’re in the hood!

toronto / friday.

and spent the rest of the afternoon bouncing from one side of the street to the other, in and out of all the cute little vintage stores on kensington ave.

toronto / friday.

when it started ticking towards lunchtime, i walked back towards entertainment district, and along the walls filled with graffiti and street art close to queen street west, which is a great shopping street.

toronto / friday.

so i took a stroll along this cute little part of the street before it was time to eat.

toronto / friday.

i went for this selection of 10000 new fish. scary!! also first-ever time for me to eat eel. and maybe last ehe. :/

toronto / friday.

after my super late lunch, i thought i’d check out toronto’s own brewery, steam whistle!

toronto / friday.

i went for a tour, and it was super interesting! i learned for example that steam whistle doesn’t use preservatives, which makes the beer’s shelf life shorter (and is also why they don’t export), but also is much better for your body and makes you less hungover!

toronto / friday.

and that the brewery was started by three guys who were fired from another brewery. they thought of naming it “three fired guys” before they decided on steam whistle; and there are three embossed characters under the “5% alcohol” at the bottom of the bottle (can you see?). it says “3FG” as a little easter egg and a nod to their first name idea, “three fired guys”. CUTE!

toronto / friday.

and!! ended my day with canada’s national dish—poutine! it was my first time (but not last heh) eating this weird dish with fries, cheese cubes, and gravy (i mean?!). so strange but good. and a great end to my toronto friday. <3

mao

first day in toronto: 13.000 shoes and pizza.

toronto / thursday.

so! let’s look at thursday in toronto. i landed early in the morning after the short flight over from new york (like 1,5 h).

toronto / thursday.

after getting a big breakfast at a little diner, i walked to drop off my bags. hello drizzly dowtown.

toronto / thursday.

my first mission was the shoe museum!

toronto / thursday.

apparently, they have about 13.000 artifacts. the first exhibition started way back several thousands of years. these particular ones are maybe not THAT old, but you know, still.

toronto / thursday.

and some more contemporary ones, like these (actual) moonboots.

toronto / thursday.

one exhibition was on men in heels, where these extravagant platforms that elton john had worn stood!

toronto / thursday.

hello from canada!

toronto / thursday.

another cool exhibition was on outerwear in the areas around the polar circle. a parka made from seal intestines or boots from fish skin, anyone?

toronto / thursday.

this last exhibition was on painful or hurtful fashion (like dresses filled with asbestus, corsets, extremely narrow shoes, and stuff like that). ouch.

toronto / thursday.

thank you, shoe museum! time to move on.

toronto / thursday.

look at this little baby! it’s so funny how different squirrels look in different areas. that there are black ones in canada, the huge fat grey new york ones, or the tiny ginger ones in sweden.

toronto / thursday.

and here i was thinking toronto would be just clean high-rises. oh how wrong i was.

toronto / thursday.

it was still gray and a little rainy in the afternoon, but it was ok cause toronto was still cute!

toronto / thursday.

with drizzle, low brick houses and graffiti, it felt more like london than north america?? totally different from what i expected!!

toronto / thursday.

i had heard a lot of good about the little area kensington market, so that’s where i went.

toronto / thursday.

the first place i was met by was the toronto popcorn company! a tiny store with like a million popcorn flavors.

toronto / thursday.

and then i browsed food and vintage clothing for a while (bought some stuff i’ll show you later) before returning to my temporary bed to chill for a bit.

toronto / thursday.

in the evening, i decided to take a walk towards financial.

toronto / thursday.

and passed by the windows at saks fifth avenue! so prettyyyyyyyy

toronto / thursday.

candy everything!

toronto / thursday.

hello city hall!

toronto / thursday.

and after a whole day of walking, i decided to reward myself with pizza. i went to this hidden place. libretto!

toronto / thursday.

and ordered this beauty! with (brace yourselves): roasted cremini mushrooms, gorgonzola, crème fraîche, asiago, pecorino, roasted garlic, brown butter, thyme, and lemon. plus a glass of cab. YUMMMMMMMM. slept so good after this. thanks for this first day, t!

mao

first toronto moments.

happy sunday, cyber besties!
as you know, i’m in toronto over the thanksgiving weekend. it’s so cute here! i have a ton of pictures to go through, edit, and show you—but first, let’s go through the first canada moments through my phone:

1

i had a window seat on my suuuper early flight out from new york, and the sun was rising just as i woke up from my nap in the seat.

2

when i landed, though, it was drizzly and foggy, although it looked very pretty against cn tower.

3

contrasts downtown. nice, don’t you think? (and yes, i promise i went to toronto even though the only city name i caught literally was “new york” that i just left looOOooOol)

5

the first night, i passed by city hall where this pretty color-shifting statue stands. <3

6

kensington market is so cute! filled with cute shops.

7

and a loooot of vintage! spent SO much time here.

8

i also expected toronto to be kind of clean in a sterile and sleek way, but it’s filled with quirk and graffiti. likey like.

9

i also went to steam whistle brewery and went on a tour! it was pretty interesting, and i also love their retro-style bottle! too bad they don’t export though.

10

that’s the first report from the 6! more pics are coming, so brace yourselves. xx

mao

babes!! in exactly three weeks, it’s thanksgiving here in the states. which means a couple of days off. i want to refrain from using expressions such as “wanderlust”, but maybe rather the ants in my pants or the restless soul in me makes it impossible for me to stay put for a longer period of time without anything to do.

so the other day i did what i do every now and then—basically just looking at a map to see what seems to be fun, close enough to fly to over a weekend, and not too expensive.

last thanksgiving it was san diego, on spring break it was portland and seattle, then chicago over  labor dar. this time, it’s time for toronto. pretty convenient, since i’m over here on the east coast this time.

the visa thing is its whole own story (i could even write a BOOK about that shit), but basically what i’m thinking is that it’s never 100% sure for how long i can stay in this country and when i have to leave, so traveling within and around the u.s. is my priority while i’m residing here. i’ve been doing pretty good lately, i think!

if you have any tips for toronto, please bring them on!

(pic source is my pinterest)

mao

stockholm in california.

let’s check out the second part of the saturday when i went to los angeles over a day. first half can be found here.

stockholm ca.

so, after the museum of broken relationships, me and siri jumped in an uber.

stockholm ca.

to this house up in the hollywood hills.

stockholm ca.

where sandra was staying!

stockholm ca.

and valerie and elsa too.

stockholm ca.

we had beer and champagne on the balcony.

stockholm ca.

and took pictures. and there’s gustav in his face mask too, hi :))

stockholm ca.

outside our little balcony oasis, the trees were big and green and warm and golden.

stockholm ca.

daniel in the far back joined us as well and we babbled about stockholm and jetlag and the festival we were heading off to shortly after. clinked and cheered about being in los angeles, and then jumped into some cabs that were gonna take us downtown to stockholm, ca. exciting!

stockholm ca.

we arrived just in the beginning of queen veronica maggio’s concert. she slayed as per usual!!

stockholm ca.

“music by sweden, weather by california” was the tagline of this festival. and indeed :)))

stockholm ca.

nause were there.

stockholm ca.

but first and foremost, this one. hanging out with siri in cali for a day healed my homesick heart a little. <3

stockholm ca.

icona pop played and people were waving with swedish flags. the place was packed with swedes, obviously.

stockholm ca.

beer brand pripps blå were there and had set up these classic swedish huts. cute.

stockholm ca.

then rebecca & fiona played. i doubt this is a picture of them but let’s pretend it is.

stockholm ca.

we alternated between jumping around at the concerts and mingling in the vip lounge. also saw that jason aka timbuktu was hanging around, but i didn’t chat with him and now i regret it because we’re supposed to get married and live happily forever after?!?! (which i made clear already in 2013.) goddamn it, vicky.

stockholm ca.

and then we watched little dragon and had moscow mules until it got late and me and siri grabbed an uber to the hotel to get a little sleep since we were getting up at 6 am the next morning (but then it turned out that my flight was 4h delayed anyways :(((((( ). however SO worth flying across the country for a day in california. that state literally gives me LIFE. plus hanging out with lovely people and listen to swedish music = +++++.

now i can live through the rest of october and november! thanks all. <3

mao

museum of broken relationships.

let’s dive into LA pics with this cheerful headline. :)))

museum of broken relationships.

first thing’s first though—so i landed in LA in the middle of the night between friday and saturday, and after spending one night at my friend will’s place, i woke up to a sunny santa monica, and jumped in a cab to this green café in hollywood.

museum of broken relationships.

to meet up with this fave!!! siri! who i left in san francisco, but who i convinced to come down to LA for 24h. reunited, yay yay! felt like we hadn’t seen each other in 2 months—in fact, it was 2 weeks…

museum of broken relationships.

siri had a scramble and i had two avocado toasts, one with a sunny side up egg and one with sundried tomatoes. yummm.

museum of broken relationships.

then we walked a block away, to the museum of broken relationships that i had heard of and really wanted to visit.

museum of broken relationships.

*belongs*

museum of broken relationships.

this museum is crowd-sourced—people send in artifacts from their relationships (can be romantic ones, but also friendships, family, etc) together with a story. so many painful ones, that probably speak better for themselves:

museum of broken relationships.

museum of broken relationships.

museum of broken relationships.

museum of broken relationships.

they had a little shop too, with accurate souvenirs.

museum of broken relationships.

“broken” ugh hurts just looking at it tbh

museum of broken relationships.

this was so painful ….. but at least good to know that people everywhere have these feelings. i’ve not been wanting to talk about it, but i have been hurting over something for quite a while now. it’s getting better everyday, but being in an environment like this certainly brings it back (……).

oh well. here i am looking happy anyways because life goes on, the sun is shining, you’re with your bestie in LA and after this we popped champagne and partied instead, but that deserves its own post!

<3

mao

post-travel blues.

14625432_10154506716861093_1218201654_n

or maybe not really—maybe just exhausted.

hello again new york and hello monday to all of you. i’m excited to tell you all about my super quick LA trip, but first i need to sleep. instead of getting back to new york in the afternoon, my flight was 4h delayed and now, it’s almost midnight.

it was so much fun and so worth going, but just like two weeks ago when i moved from sf to nyc, i cried so much on the plane back. leaving california is heartbreaking every time.

a little overwhelmed, exhausted, but happy and re-energized with west coast air and fun and friends and hugs that i can live on through the coming months.

pics are coming tomorrow, stay tuned! <3

mao
